Camden Hill and Catskills

Since we've booked Acadia as our summer vacation this year we decided to take the weekend we usually go there and head to the Camden Hills, which are also up the coast of Maine but only half as long a drive. The weather looked different on every forecast we saw so just decided to go and see what we ended up with. Fortunately it turned out to be pretty nice all weekend, with temps in the 60's and 70's and quite a bit of sun, and the only rain was overnight Sunday night, long enough to make us pack up a wet tent but it was gone by the time we got up. All in all not a bad weekend. Our site was right next to the swing sets, where the girls spent almost every minute when we were around camp, and we managed to have a couple campfires and smores, go for a hike up Bald Rock Mountain, beach comb a couple beaches in the area, get some ice creams, walk out to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, and drive up Mount Battie's auto road and finish it off with a stop at Famous Dave's on the ride home where the kids eat free on Monday nights. Not bad for about 48 hours. We all had a great time and as usual it was nice to just relax and enjoy some time with the family. For the pictures from that trip you can click right here.

The weekend before Ryan and I continued our quest to climb all the 4000 footers in the Northeast, which brought us to the Catskills for an overnight trip. Greg joined us this time for our 37th birthday weekend hike and again the weather worked out pretty well for us. We picked Ryan up Saturday morning and made the easy drive out on I-90 for 4 hours and started with a stretch out hike of Katterskill Falls, one of the highest in the eastern US and when the water is flowing well one of the most spectacular. After that we headed for Hunter Mountain, which at 4050 feet is one of the two 4000 footers in the Catskills, and we hiked up to it's summit to catch a sunset before coming down and getting dinner and going to the campground, only to be told we had to have been there by 9 o'clock to get in. So after sleeping in the car and/or parking lot we got up early and went on a 15.5 mile hike to Climb the other 4000 footer in the area, 4190 foot Slide Mountain. Along the way we climbed two more of their 3500ers and it ended up being a long but great hike. Two more 4000 footers in hand we hopped in the car and headed home. Another full 36 hours but lots of fun. For the pictures from that trip you can click here.

That's about all we've had going on for the last week or so, and if summer arrives there will be plenty more fun things to do so check back soon. That's all for this time.
